Confession

The sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession is a sacrament provided by Jesus Christ.  John 20:22-23 is Jesus emphasizing one essential aspect of the priestly ministry of the apostles: To Forgive men’s sins in the person of Christ— “Whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven, whose sins you retain are retained.”

In the Roman Catholic Church people go to confession to say sorry to God, audibly, for the wrong (sin) in their lives and to experience God’s healing through forgiveness. Confession also permits reconciliation with the Church, which is wounded by the sins people commit.  Confession brings about reconciliation between God and the repentant, as well as between the penitent and others.

What are the stages of the Sacrament of Reconciliation?
  • Examination of conscience.
  • Contrition.
  • Confession.
  • Absolution.
  • Penance.

Confession is heard by the priest on Saturdays between 8.30 am and 9.00am and between 4.30pm-5.15pm, and on request.   For urgent reconciliation needs please contact the parish office.

Confirmation

The sacrament of Confirmation is a Christian rite in which one accepts reponsibility for one’s faith and destiny.  This sacrament is usually received as a young adult – around the age of 16 or 17.  The focus is on the Holy Spirit of God, who confirmed the apostles on Pentecost (Acts 2:1–4) and gave them courage to practice their faith. During the Sacrament of Confirmation, Catholics believe that the same Holy Spirit comes down on the confirmant and gives them the same gifts and fruits.

Confirmation is preceded by catechism instruction which is held on Sunday mornings. Please contact the parish office for more info.

First Holy Communion

The First Holy Communion of a baptized child is normally celebrated at the age of ten or eleven after the child has done their First Confession (the sacrament of Reconciliation).  Catechism classes are held on Sunday mornings. Please contact the parish office for more info.

Annointing of the Sick

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament where we receive Christ’s healing touch. We pray for the sick person’s physical, mental, and spiritual healing in the Sacrament. The sacrament of reconciliation and healing is offered during the anointing. Please contact the parish office.

Marriage

Couples wishing to marry must make an appointment to see Fr Joe at least six months before the proposed date of the wedding.  He will outline the documents needed and the details of the marriage preparation course.

The couple are obliged to attend a marriage preparation course, designed to help them reflect on their future marriage relationship and to talk honestly and deeply about their future.  Self identity, roles, expectations of each other in areas of money, sex, friends, children, family, religion and the Church’s beliefs about marriage are some of the topics covered.

After completing the course and submitting all the required documents, the next meeting will deal with more paperwork and the Pre-Nuptial inquiry will be done.  Guidance will be provided for the music, Scripture Readings and the details of the ceremony itself.

RCIA

In the Bryanston parish, we are lucky to have a dedicated team who run the Rite of Christian Initiatiation of Adults program, which serves the needs of all those who wish to be received into the Church.

RCIA is intended to instruct in the Catholic Faith those who are seeking to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church through Baptism and/or Confirmation and Holy Communion. RCIA is your compass to the Catholic Faith.

Who should look into RCIA?

Anyone not yet baptized; anyone baptized but not as a Catholic; anyone baptized as a Catholic who did not yet receive first Communion or Confirmation; fully initiated Catholics seeking fuller catechetical knowledge of their Catholic Faith; and anyone at all looking to learn more about Christianity.

There are almost as many reasons why people decide to become a Catholic as there are people in the world, but they are all joined by one common trait:  They have in some way been touched by the beauty of the Chruch and the Holy Spirit has (as with the disciples returning from Emmaus) put a fire in their hearts which has kindled their faith.
The course differentiates between those who are baptized (Candidates) and those who are not (Catechumens), but they all will be received into full communion with the Church by the end of the course.  Every year, we take these Candidates and Catechumens on a journey to deepen their faith and learn what it means to be a Catholic Christian.
They finally receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil.  This is always a moving occasion for all as they are welcomed into the Church as fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

If you would like to undergo the Rite of Christian Initiation, please contact the parish office for further information.
