TEACH US TO PRAY
“The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings” (cf. Rom 8:26).
What is prayer? It is commonly held to be a conversation. In a conversation there are always an “I” and a “thou” or “you.” In this case the “Thou” is with a capital T. If at first the “I” seems to be the most important element in prayer, prayer teaches that the situation is different. The “Thou” is more important, because our prayer begins with God. In his Letter to the Romans, Saint Paul teaches precisely this. The handbook “Teach us to Pray”, issued by the Vatican, inspired by the Magisterium of Pope Francis, is intended to be an invitation to intensify prayer as a personal dialogue with God, to lead one to reflect on one’s faith, on one’s commitment in today’s world, in the different spheres in which one is called to live. Each week we will be making available a chapter or part thereof during this Year of Prayer, which is in preparation for the Holy Year, next year. The weekly copies are available in the foyer.
VOCATION REFLECTIONS
Pray today for those whom God calls and sends as ministers of Good News. (Amos 7:12-15).
Prayer for peace in Southern Africa
O God of justice and love, bless us the people of Southern Africa and help us to live in your peace.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred let me sow love;
where there is injury let me sow pardon;
where there is discord let me sow harmony.
Divine master, grant that I may not so much seek to be understood,
as to understand,
to be loved as to love, to receive sympathy as to give it.
For it is in giving that we shall
receive, in pardoning that we shall be pardoned,
in forgetting ourselves
that we shall find unending peace with others. Amen.
